About the event

Join us “In Conversation” with an incredible filmmaker whose career is on fire!

Writer-director Goran Stolevski is a Macedonian-born, Melbourne-raised filmmaker who broke onto the international stage with his feature debut “You Won’t Be Alone,” a supernatural folk-horror tale about a girl who becomes a shape-shifter in a 19th-century Macedonian village. The film won critical acclaim at Sundance and received a limited theatrical release in the U.S. through Focus Features. His second feature film, “Of An Age” is set in Melbourne in the summer of 1999 and follows the intense gay romance of a Serbian-Australian ballroom dancer and his dance partner’s brother. A decade later the pair meet for a bittersweet reunion. It was shot in the suburban streets he inhabited after migrating from Macedonia at age 12. His upcoming third feature film, “Housekeeping for Beginners” is set in present-day Macedonia about a queer woman who doesn’t want to be a mother but is forced to raise her partner’s daughter.

Goran has a Master's in Film and Television from VCA. He has made 25 short films including “Would You Look At Her,” which won the jury prize for a short film at Sundance in 2018, and “You Deserve Everything,” which won the Ruben Mamoulian Best Director Award at the 2016 Sydney Film Festival. He is an alumnus of the Berlinale Talent Campus and MIFF Accelerator and he received the $50,000 Lexus Fellowship for “My Boy Oleg.” His films have been screened at over 250 festivals across six continents, including Clermont-Ferrand, Melbourne, Raindance, Adelaide, London Shorts, Iris Prize, Frameline, Newfest, and Flickerfest International Film Festivals.
