About the event
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Presented by accomplished screen industry executive Fiona Gilroy, this practical and accessible workshop will demystify the world of content distribution - the place where creativity meets business!
Having an understanding of the commercial world of distribution is really important to have as a content creator, whether you’re making films, TV or online series. After all, what’s the point of making content that isn’t seen by an audience?
Find out how distributors are able to help at all stages of production. Explore how they can help find finance for projects and exploit the rights for the long term to maximise audiences and financial returns. Learn what distributors are looking for and how to connect with them.
In this workshop, aimed primarily at producers with little or rudimentary knowledge of how distribution works, you’ll get to grips with key aspects of content distribution including:
- Understanding the commercial rights associated with content you create and how its exploited
- How to appoint a distributor, what they do and how you work with them
- Understanding the market, your audience and the buying process
Join us to gain practical knowledge and tools that will help you understand and connect with distributors to get your next creative project out there and SEEN!
Fiona Gilroy’s Bio:
Having begun my career at Film Australia as the Sales and Marketing Operations Manager, I moved to SBS as their Content Sales Manager in 1996. In 2011 I joined John Caldon to launch Flame Distribution as its Content Sales & Acquisitions Director. We built a business with offices in Sydney, Manila, New York, Eastern Europe, Singapore and London, representing a catalogue with over 2,500 hours of content for the linear TV, streaming, inflight and educational markets.
I moved over to Abacus Media Rights when they acquired Flame Distribution in 2022 as their Acquisitions Director for Australia and New Zealand.
Since mid-2023 I’ve worked with Media Mentors Australia, helping to establish Screen Careers where I am now the Head of Business Development and Communications. Screen Careers is a national NFP organisation working to create a pipeline of new below the line crew and offering life-long learning opportunities for those crew already in the industry.
I’ve also served as the staff elected director at Film Australia and as a board member of the AIDC from 2014 to 2020, serving as Co-Chair for 5 years. I was a member of the AIDC Advisory Committee for the 2021 conference and have been a panelist and speaker at many industry conferences worldwide.
